4 Signs That Your Ducts Are Leaking

We’re now into the warm summer months and although we might enjoy the outdoors, it’s refreshing to relax inside and enjoy the comfortable, conditioned air. But maybe this year your AC isn’t working like it used to. Perhaps you’ve noticed changes in the air quality, humidity, or coolness of your indoor air – or even changes to your electric bill. There are some explanations for the changes in your AC efficiency and your ducts just may be the culprit.

If you noticed any of these signs and symptoms, you may have leaky ducts:

  1. Uneven heating and cooling—If you notice certain rooms or areas of your home are not as cool in the summer or warm in the winter as other areas, your ducts may be leaking. Properly installed ductwork should evenly reach every room or area of your home.
  2. Higher energy bill—Generally speaking, your energy costs do not drastically change year over year. If your energy bill is noticeably higher than it was this time last year, it’s time to evaluate your ductwork. Even small leaks can have a negative impact on your system. When your ductwork leaks, it puts stress on the entire system and causes it to work harder than it needs to, which leads to higher energy costs.
  3. Dusty home—Dust accumulates normally in homes and even more so if you have a pet. However, if you start to notice an unusual amount of dust build-up around your home, it could be a sign of a leak. A properly functioning HVAC system does a good job of catching dust in its filters. If you have leaks in your ducts, dust can enter at places that bypass the filter, allowing dust to distribute throughout your home.
  4. Your ductwork is old—Even with proper care, maintenance, and installation, over time your ductwork will need to be repaired or replaced. Don’t put it off until next summer. If your ductwork is old, it’s time to have a professional take a look. Poor ductwork will strain your HVAC system and can cause you more in the long run since your unit will need to be serviced more often if it isn’t running properly.

How to Fix Air Duct Leaks

While there are some methods you can do yourself to try and spot a leak, such as visual inspection or using a smoke pencil, it’s best to have a professional assess your system to find the leak. Our certified professionals will do a quick test prior to sealing holes to measure leakage. We can also perform Aeroseal duct sealing that seals from the inside of your ducts, creating a faster and more thorough fix.
